I enjoyed your newsletter. Plastic bags. Here, in the Cleveland, OH area, back in 2020 plastic bags were to be banned from grocery stores and such. Then the Covid shutdown in March. We were not allowed to use reusable bags, so plastic bags were not banned and they still are not banned. If I remember correctly I don't think the law of banning plastic bags ever went into effect.
Thank you for reading it, Ed. The same thing happened in a city near me. A produce bag ban was about to go into effect, then Covid hit. I'm not sure what happened with that ban but now this new ban will be statewide beginning tomorrow. I hope we see more of these bans in 2025. Happy new year!
Hi Anne Marie, Former American here now living in Italy. I struggle to understand why the US doesn’t at the very least, charge for the plastic shop bags to incentivize people to bring their own. In Italy it’s even common for people to re-use the little paper bags for produce that we get at the market. Could anything be easier than bringing our own bags to shop? Every time I go to visit my mom in Indiana I wonder why no change. Help me understand?
The worst waste of plastic bags are dog sh!t bags - are they going to ban those?! Q: What's worse than seeing dog sh!t left on the beach? A: Dog sh!t in a plastic bag left on the beach. Why do I see this ALL THE F&@#$$%%^&& time?! Obviously these people love the beach- why would they be so careless?!
I think it's short-sighted to believe that the change in labelling of food '...will reduce greenhouse gas emissions caused by wasted food and save consumers money.'
I know people who throw people out based on the dates and they are not reading the words to interpret them, but simply seeing the dates and throwing it out. I don't think those people are going to suddenly start believing the government enough to believe they should not throw out food as soon as it gets to that date.
I am glad to hear of the reform all the same, though.

Happy New Year!
Great update! I've started using reusable produce bags instead of the plastic ones our stores provide.
