Beaverland is an amazing read!

It is amazing! Just like the beavers.

That's awesome! I had not heard about a lot of these. The only one I had learned about earlier this year was the salmon returning after the dams were removed. It's nice to see nature rebound so quickly, as it helps our impatient human brains see the benefits earlier.

The rebound is so encouraging!

My local library had a presentation by Ridwell, a sorting business for some plastics that are unacceptable by the City of Long Beach CA. Ridwell sends snack packaging, hard plastic bags, pill bottles etc. to other industries to create something useful. When you see a product that claims some parts are recycled, now you know. There are 14 warehouses in western USA. The acceptance rate is 97%. In other words, users of Ridwell read and follow the rules. It is a good thing.

I do Ridwell’s mail-in bags for flexible and crinkle packaging and it’s great. I don’t use their full service pick up for other things because I don’t have a need but I love that they offer textile, battery and other kinds of hard-to-recycle pick up. Unfortunately the older apartment I just moved into near Denver doesn’t offer regular recycling services because ‘the residents would just throw trash in there if we had a bin’ - more likely the property owner doesn’t want to pay for it 🙄. So I have to find a place to take my normal recycling now.

Love how the Klamath River restoration has brought back salmon so fast. The contrast between beavers building damms overnight versus human bureaucracy is wild, but what really caught me was the South Korea food waste program. That 23.9% decline from pay-as-you-throw bins is a solid model worth replicating. I tried adding natives to my space last year and the learning curve was suprisingly gentle once I stopped overthinking plant selection.
