Thank you for this great article. As a Canadian we have been boycotting US products and intend to do the black out on the 28th. I had no idea you in the US would follow suit albeit for somewhat different reasons! I love supporting our local businesses - it makes for a great community. This is a win win for everyone.
Oh, man, the Air BnB one hurts. I love using Air BnB. I've met so many cool people staying Air BnBs over the last ten years. I also love them because I like to cook my own meals when I travel. But anyone who willingly associates with Elon Musk must be as hate-filled, loathsome and morally bankrupt as he is, so....so long, Air BnB.
One day is NOT ENOUGH. Major retailers will (rightly) assume that everyone will do their shopping either the day before or after the blackout. This blackout should last a WEEK at LEAST. Actual pain must be inflicted for the point to be made. It's time for a general strike!!
Thank you for the reminder, Anne Marie. You have my commitment to follow through this Friday! Your link to the AirBnB alternatives got me thinking too, thank you! Because your link took me to the Guardian and I read their moving appeal for support, I went ahead and did that too.
Great article! Made me check my PayPal account...there WAS a little bit of money there. Last time I saw that, I thought they were trying to SELL me something, so I ignored it. It was money owed to me, that I had forgotten about. Of course they CHARGE you a percentage to send it back to your bank...even though they've had it in THEIR bank for possibly months. I am so sick of corporations and those who head them up, taking monetary advantage of us. WE NEED to be informed and RESIST! Thanks again, for the wake up article
Identity politics has nothing to do with zero-waste living and is an unnecessarily divisive issue to bring into this forum. I signed up to this forum (and bought your book) for the very useful advance on how to reduce waste and get tips on more ecological living and cooking. Not to listen to identity politics or support for Ukrainian Nazis (which I didn't bother commenting on). If you really care about getting more people living more ecologically and frugally, just leave off the politics. Please.
I'm shocked to discover that people don't see the direct tie between living ecologically and frugally and being a resistance to the authoritarians, the anti-regulationists, and the oligarchs.
Why do you think you aren't part of the resistance?
Why is it important to you that you be doing this work without being part of encouraging diversity, equity, or inclusion in society? Why do you think that ecological and frugal living have to be monolithic, unjust, and exclusive?
If you are a member of the DNC you are not a member of the "resistance" but part of the oligarchic monolith. Both parties work for the same masters. "DEI" and all the rhetoric surrounding it is just a psyop. I'm sorry if you, and a lot of other "left-leaning" and well meaning people don't see that yet. I hope some day you will, and we can have a true grassroots people based community that is not manipulated by the political parties, their propaganda media outlets and oligarchic masters. If you continue to buy into the notion of "DEI" - which is the most exclusive, divisive and racist ideology I have seen in my life time - then I am sorry, and I hope you come around someday. I truly do.
As a European I try to understand you. What makes you so angry about diversity? Why is being political left so wrong in your eyes? I have had lots of chances in this world because of my place of birth, my education, my family and social network. But not everybody has the same chances, life is not fair, not in Europe, not in the US. And that for me is a reason to vote on the left. Not for myself, but to make sure we all get a chance to live a good and healthy life. Is that what you mean by "woke"?
It's the LAW that is being abused for political purposes, to be divisive and distract people from other issues. It is also social engineering and is being pushed HARD. For a while you couldn't turn around without race/trans issues in your face, pushed on kids, everything. People lost their jobs for not complying with "pronouns" and other nonsense. DEI forced the hire of unqualified people, simply because of their race or sexual preference. Activists were hired and all they do is push their political ideology and run companies, NGOs and the government into the ground. It's so toxic, divisive and every one is so sick of it. And, there are already plenty of laws to protect people against discriminations. There are many other problems with the left - here represented, allegedly, by the Democrats, who have become a war party, in bed with the deep state, and basically betraying every single value they every claimed to have held. They are now they party of Dick and Liz Cheney now, I guess? They drive us to the brink of war for personal vendettas and don't know the first thing about"diplomacy". No alternative to the neocons, war mongers and deep state.
I just really, really want to have a politics-free space where I can feel like I can read about frugality, zero-waste and so on without having to listen to some delusional bulls*t about DEI being a good thing. I just never drank the kool-aid. Truly, wake up about what this is really all about.
He is interesting. There are many others, and it's so important to protect the First Amendment - even if you don't agree with everything someone has to say, they have a right to say it. And, you can learn a lot from people you might not agree with - if nothing else, how and why they think as they do. Open hearts, and discerning minds.
What is wrong with them? They are very qualified. Why do you focus so much on color or race. See the person for what work they do & the knowledge. Do you want someone that doesn't know anything about a job?

Thank you for very much reading it. Maybe the blackout will go global!

I know lots of people love it. The alternatives in the article I link to look pretty good. I think one is actually called Cool Stays 😎
Why not just start today. Don’t wait until Feb 28th.

exactly. the Montgomery bus boycott lasted a year! actual pain must be inflicted and to do that it must be difficult for us, too.
I agree 100%. We are giving them power

And Venmo is owned by PayPal, correct? So is Zelle a good alternative?
Protest through our pocketbooks.

Sorry for the rant. I'm fed up too.
Thank you for your reply. I may not agree with all you say but I understand you are worried. So am I. In the end we do not differ so much.
We are all the same when it comes down to it.
Yes, we are. Let's focus on that more. Thanks for your comments.
Agree completely. I learned a lot from people like david icke.

Merit like Kash Patel, Tulsi Gabbard and Pete Hegseth?
That kind of Merit?
Tulsi Gabbard served in the US military, was an American Congresswoman, AND is a woman of color. I'd say that's plenty of merit. What's not to like?
That she's a Russian asset who pals around with our enemies? That Russian media calls her "their girlfriend?" That Tulsi Gabbard?
Let me guess - you get your "news" from CNN? Rachel Maddow? Bought the whole Russiagate hoax?
You sound like you belong in the McCarthy era. This would be so ridiculous, if it wasn't so dangerous.
