Sue, we live in a NYC co-op so our fridge is tiny relative to what most people would have in a home. I am constantly juggling to find more space in the freezer. I'm going to look into a small, free-standing, efficient freezer.
Btw, I'm halfway through CHALLENGER. I shouldn't have been surprised by the racism and male-only spirit that dominated the early days of the space program.
We lived in a small condo for years, and our small freezer was one of the best purchases we made. We only had room in the living room for it. We threw an old curtain on top of it and a couple of decorations. No one knew it was a freezer until we opened it!
😁 Most of my friends think I'm weird because I try to use /reuse most of everything. If the cat doesn't finish his food, the crows get the leftovers. I make my own kombucha and the fruit I add during second fermentation I strain out before bottling and mix it with chia seeds to make crunchy snacks in the dehydrator for our parrot...but we eat those, too. I make a batch of freshly milled whole grain cookies and freeze 2 in a bag. Makes them last longer. I make roasted tomatoes with onions, garlic & herbs to freeze in portions. I make pesto and garlic mush that I freeze flat in freezer bags to break of what I need. I make my own multi nut butter with added chia seeds to avoid the oil separation, but that just goes in the fridge. I even make my own tofu and tempeh and freeze those in portions. I'd be lost without a freezer. And yes, I'm retired and love cooking, fermenting, baking (sourdough) and healthy food in general. No junk in my house. I could use some ideas what to do with okara, the pulp left over after making tofu. I've added it to eggs, lasagne, soup and dehydrated it to make powder to add to smoothies. Any new ideas? 😉
I want to come over for dinner! Adding okara to granola uses up a pile of it with very little effort. I add about a cup for every three cups of oats, plus all the other stuff (nuts, seeds and after cooking, dried fruit). It adds a nice texture.
Thank you for these helpful tips, Anne! Specialty ingredients are my pet peeve. Even though I'll happily admit I'm curious what prickly pear syrup tastes like.
I have a Costco card primarily for gas. In the store, I asked for a small basket and was told promptly that Costco is a big store with big sizes and patrons are expected to buy big. No kidding.
Just give it up. Why would you want food from china? Obviously they have ripped the U.S off for years. They have charged the U.S way more and no one did anything. Trump is making them pay their fair share. Why should we pay more for their cheap crap? I would rather have something made in the U.S.

Great idea!
Great analogy. I was thinking the same thing.
My husband made the same analogy this AM. Great minds and all :)
Thank you! Great minds :)

Ooh great idea! I need to make up another batch anyway. Thanks bunches!! Dinner is at 5pm. See you then !! 🤣

Thank you for reading, Petrina. My daughter bought prickly pear syrup on a trip to Arizona (I think) but I never did try it. It looked good!

Wow! So carts only? And those are very big carts.
Which grocery store is this?? After the sad closure of Byrd's Filling Station, I'm trying to find another bulk shop of the same caliber...
I was also sad that Byrd’s closed. I loved that store. This store is Rainbow Grocery in San Francisco.
I just got my copy of your cookbook today and have already been enjoying it a great deal!
Thank you very much! I’m so glad you’re enjoying it.
I actually linked to it in my post yesterday as I meandered through avoiding food waste https://www.thegardenofeating.org/2025/04/carrot-cake.html
Thank you for sharing! Your carrot cake looks delicious 🤤😋
Thanks so much!
