Instead of buying gifts, I ask friends if there is anything I can repair. I have both a sewing machine and serger. I love to tear clothing apart and make it useful.
Excellent post. Great examples. I also love thinking about Japanese concepts, like Kintsugi "repairing a ceramic , like a vase, with gold -- so it's even more valuable when repaired". and Visible mending -- kind of what you were doing with the haphazard sewing of the holes in the denim. Lots of inspiration from Japanese where "mottanaii" is (Iliterally) the MO! Thank you, Anne-Marie. And...welcome home.
Thank you Jacquie. I would love to try kintsugi. And I'd like to learn some more advanced visible mending techniques. The moths have eaten one of my favorite sweaters. Maybe I need to write a post on prevention.
Great thoughts Anne Marie! I finished reading The Serviceberry a few weeks ago and found it interesting and inspiring. I tend to repair and fix things up too - and I find it very satisfying. It is too easy to just buy new things and throw out the old - with the vast array of online shopping sites and apps. Instead, my usual first start when things don’t work is to take them apart and see if they can be fixed up at home - often successfully. It is a great feeling when they are back in good condition. A recent example was an artificial fireplace insert for an in-law. The air vents were stuffed full of cat fur and had jammed up the fans. I took it back to my workshop, cleaned it up and did a few minor repairs to get everything freed up and properly lubricated. It was so nice to see her delighted reaction when I showed her the repaired insert back in working order.
Thanks Andy. Repairing is so satisfying. I've never had the same sense of satisfaction from buying a replacement. I'm sure the cat owner was thrilled with the repaired insert. Probably the cat too—the room will be warmer.
In the 3R's (Reduce, ReUse, Recycle) mantra, one of the biggest savings we can make is considering animals along side when cleaning up after batch cooking. Especially when everything has been 'plated out'.
Having a 'bucket station' close to the trash can and training staff to empty the preconsumer/ Timed out left overs or prep waste into it will "REUSE" nutrients (keeping trash out) will trigger our ANImal Altruism enough to change behaviors.
This part can be scheduled. It is nothing for an animal owner to pick up this daily around the time of transfer. And the nutrients are still viable for critters.
Do you know your county's "Food Waste Mile" to composting the centralized dumpsters of nasty food waste?
Why not let the restaurants divert earlier with help?
I have only recently subscribed and find that these articles are about being positive in a practical way and every little thing that we do can make a difference. Thank you.
perfect timing. i've just had my slow combustion heater pulled out to be reconditioned and reinstalled. and my garden is an abundant jungle that really needs me to think about succession planning. i sat on the back verandah yesterday, listening to the birds and shelling beans. the blue lake climbing beans have been prolific and there's such sensory pleasure in plunging my una into a bowlful of beans. we rob ourselves of these pleasures when we go too fast..

Oh I'd be absolutely thrilled if someone repaired my broken items for me for my birthday or mother's day or whatever. That would be the best gift.
Love this. Powerful metaphor and advice for where we are right now.
Thank you
